It's been quite some time since I've updated my blog.
About a week, maybe more.
Well, it's been a busy week, filled with assignments, torrents [oops] and Facebook.

Yeap, Facebook.
Every college kid's favourite site, it's more than a website, it's an extension of our life, a virtual representation of who we are, why we do the stuff we do, and what we like.

It might be real, it might not be, but suffice to say, we treat it as part of our identity.
We choose the best profile picture that we can find, or we sometimes choose the weird ones.
Just for the shock value, or plainly to mark that I-don't-care attitude that we sometimes indulge in.

Or maybe it just doesn't matter to us.
:D

So I have 899 friends the last time I counted, about half whom I don't know quite well, 1023 photos that I'm tagged in, videos, applications that track me, and what-nots.

And honestly, I got sick of it.
I'm tired of myself, really, tired that I can't seem to break this habit of checking Facebook whenever I'm logging on to the interwebs.

Which, for me, means always.
I don't usually shut down my laptop, unless I get a kernel panic or install some system-level thing that requires me to reboot.

And that spelled trouble, as I struggled to maintain concentration, constantly checking Facebook, then Twitter, then my torrent clients [ yes, I use a couple for different protocols ] and emails.

Not to mention the constant stream of RSS feeds that I subscribed to, all having tips or news or personal things that people close to me share.

I was facing an avalanche of information, constantly switching my view from one to another, and Facebook being the worst of them all. It's always open in my first tab, and I always check it to see if my friends have any updates of any sort.

That was what I told myself anyway.

Well most of the time what came into my stream was just nonsense, useless notes piled with sappy advice on relationships that most likely were written in an unstable emotional state, applications or quizzes that keep on appearing even though you've hidden them for countless times, and more.

Yes, I can hide the apps, ignore the notes, unfriend those I don't know , and keep the stream running clean.

But that was not the point, I've always done so, even putting friends into lists so that I can easily receive their updates and it would only be from those that I knew.
It was me, me being so compulsively addicted to wasting time on Facebook while all the time I told myself to just take a 5 minute break when I've wasted so much time already.

The break point came during the week, when I realised that I was checking Facebook way before I even thought of spending time with God.

A simple "Good morning Holy Spirit" and I was up, stuck in front this 15inch of glass and I would forget stuff soon after that.

Yes, I have to tackle my priorities, and I felt that deactivating Facebook was the best way for now.
:)

When you think that you can't survive without something or someone else other than God, you're in deep trouble.

I was effectively worshipping an idol, no matter how much I tried to justify it.
And I knew that in order to be right I had to be drastic about it.

Now I'm not advocating this for everyone, nor am I against online networking.
Those who know me well enough know that I have accounts at almost every kind of social networking site, from Twitter to Last.fm and to DeviantArt.

I'm in them all, but Facebook was something different to me.
I was obsessed with it.
And you know you are when you're checking it in tutorials while the lecturer is speaking, it was that bad for me.

So yeap, I'm just putting Facebook on hold for now, and letting it slide down from the place that it occupies in my heart and mind till it hits some level that I can manage.

I should manage it, not let it manage me.

I'll still be back for sure, but I might not be that active, and it might not be that soon.
:)

There's that beauty and connection in face to face conversations, Skype and all that Facebook can't replace.
It's just that version of us that we want others to think of, not the one that we are.

Close, but not in anyway us.

It's a longer rant than usual, and honestly, after a day without Facebook it's been quite weird.
I feel somewhat disconnected from an online community of friends, instinctively checking the first tab of my browser only to find that the blue favicon is no longer there.

:)

So it's kinda like a cold turkey and an experiment for me.
I'll see how life without Facebook, that virtual extension of me play out.
I bet for once, I'll have more time to do other things.

Like doing my assignments, or reading a book, or taking a walk.

I'll write on this from time to time again, maybe it might encourage others to take some steps to see more of the real world and less of the online one.

It's when you unplug from the Matrix that you'll finally realise how much you've been dependent on it, and how in the end it's nothing but binary code, swimming around to lull you into a false sense of security.

Ok, enough of that Matrix analogy, I can go on and on.

One day down, more to go.

Had a great dinner, or rather, CNY dinner with both families dining at Todak.

Yeap.

It's been like ten years since we've been there and thank goodness the place still looks the same, feel the same and unfortunately smells the same.

The sad thing was that the food was less appealing than it previously was, and *sigh* that was a disappointment.

Oh well.

At least the best thing was being back here in Malaysia , enjoying way better food and yes, great company too.

We're still so totally awesome.

We might have grown up, and hopefully mature but we still share the same things, the funny and lame jokes, the stories and heartaches and the joy of being the best of family.

So it's 20 days more till the return to more studies and friends and the fickle-minded weather that leaves me weirder than ever.
Sounds good, and bad.

The mind gets bogged down from time to time when I start planning and deciding stuff, especially since it's year two, and I suspect that I'm the only Asian doing Lit.

It gets boring after some time, them lectures, with no friends there to fool around.

But I'm getting ahead of myself, who knows, friends come in all shapes and sizes,
And yes, nationality.
I just have to smile more and try not to dress like I've just woken up from bed.

So storms come, so thunders sound, so the house crashes but then again the pillars still stand.
It beats me.
That said,

Understanding is not a prerequisite for faith.

Faith after all, is taking the unknown step, knowing that you're walking on the right path.
Even when it seems that all is lost, and yes, even when hope seems to have taken flight, leaving you to fend off mysterious creatures in the valley.

The valley.
Confusing indeed.

This seems harder as days go by, and sometimes the temptation to just throw in the towel and let oneself slide into oblivion can be overpowering.
But still,

No.

There's only one life to live, and more chances to shine.
Only those who have completely given up the self within them have the capacity to truly live.
After all,

Living for oneself is a destructive cycle.

So here's my chance to get out of this cycle.
Choice, it's still about choice.
And hopefully,

This time, my choice is right.

A Week Later.

Went on the trip blur blur, was asked to co-lead the group, preached in Mandarin [ *gasps* ] ,
Lead worship, smiled, laughed, joked, ate, drank, shopped.
Saw, learned, listened.

The rest of the photos are on Facebook as usual.

I have to say, being a co-leader was good in many sense for me.
I was asked to do stuff and to make on-the-fly decisions together with our awesome leader Ms Janet Liow Wei Wan and yes, it was fun.

I meant the joking and being lame parts, not so much the decision making parts.

It was really, really cool to see newcomers and people who I don't really know gel together as a team and move out of their comfort zones, doing stuff that will leave a lasting impact on those they've met.
=]

My only regret was that the weather was not as cool as supposed and I was left to complain to myself about that.

Ok, it wasn't that bad.

So it concludes 6 years of doing stuff like this, and yeah, next year will see me busy with Convy 10' instead of taking that flight to Thailand.
Somehow this trip allowed me to fully understand various things that I've thought about and yes, somehow I sense that for the time being and for the period of time to come my "work" there is over.

For now.

It was kinda sad to see the plane lift-off from the tarmac bringing me with it, leaving so many memories behind.
6 trips worth, all arranged in some random order that taxes my brain as it struggles to explain.

It was a job well done.
Now, to move on.
There's so much more to do, to think and then to do.

Christmas is coming, I should be excited.

And so after listening to Owl City for just two months I can say that I’m kinda hooked on their / his songs.

Ok.

The lyrics might not make sense at times but it’s nice and relaxing on the ears, plus, a lil’ bit of electronic music done tastefully is always welcomed.

So it’s just like, 11 more hours till the team meets in church for the trip up to LCCT and then a flight in the wee hours of Sunday morning to Chiang Mai.

It should be fun, I mean, it'll be, and that is if I can recover fast enough, I'm still a lil' bit blur [ as always ] and this meany virus has somehow knocked me down.

Darn.
Of all the times to get sick, this period.
Might as well blame it on the strenuous AGM sessions.

So mission trip's tomorrow and yeah, I'm still stuck at home for now as I'm still trying to recover from fever + flu + sore throat.

Awesomeness.

All in all it'll be my 6th trip to northern Thailand and logically it would be a piece of cake [or roti canai ] for me in some sense.
I mean, it's always somewhere near the Golden Triangle.

Not this time.

This time I seem to be less prepared than the previous few, one can never over prepare for missions, and yes, this time somehow I'll have lesser expectations but a much more open-minded view of things and events.

There might be a plethora of things to complete and think through but I'm hoping to learn more, I hope to see things in a different light, hoping to somehow contribute to the team and such.

As usual my thoughts are flying way ahead of everything, like, my pimples.
Yes, yes.
I'm having less of them now that Mum has helped me with some degree of success,

Still, they are menacing.

Probably because my sleeping patterns are still all messed up.
=]

Been trying to pack and to get all my stuff ready for the upcoming OCF Australia AGM which will be from this coming Monday till Wednesday and yeah, it is starting to freak me out.

Not totally, and not coz' I'm still packing, which I am not.

It's coz', I am, going for this with a job description attached and people to meet and things to elaborate on.
It can be, at time , daunting.
Like, now.
And most likely tomorrow, and then it just might subside.

In essence, it's like the whole thing is starting to dawn on me, and yes, I am slow in this aspect.
I am really, slow.
=]

Sometimes, and lots of times, the brain starts generating various scenarios of what might happen and who I might meet and what I'lll need to say and things like that.

Waste of brain power [not that I have much of it], but still, the brain ignores and continues on.
Yes, it rebels.

Self-confidence can quickly turn into self-doubt.
Just in an instance.

Maybe, and I'm guessing that it should be.
I've been looking at things the wrong way.
Or rather, from the wrong angle.

If I, say that I can do it and I need to do whatever it takes to accomplish this task alone then I'm as doomed as Chelsea is.
[They lost. =P]

It may seem rhetorical, at least to me, being one who has always talked about looking to God and what He has done and what He can do.

Verses, without faith, become mere sentences,

Proverbs that are uttered from the mouths of others that seemingly have no impact over the situation or the person.

It takes the combination of the natural and the supernatural, one that requires trust.
It takes, action.

Sometimes what they say [whoever they are] makes sense.

Take a step back, take a deep breath.
Take in a new view, re:evaluate.
Listen, be still, and then listen still.

Taking His hands might seem like a step into the unknown, reaching out in the darkness with no clue.
Well, the good news is, it is.
Not sure about the bad news, for now I'll say, nothing lost except my pride.

It takes, faith.
Faith is, after all, believing without seeing.
